Ja’Naea Modest AKA DJ Silkee always had a love for music and the fascination of DJ-ing. He mother introduced her to music at a young age. Later, her best friend urged her to start DJ-ing for a singing group called Prince Night. From there, many doors were opened to DJ-ing in the community, from parties to residences.
Her love for music has introduced her to many opportunities. She has been able to open for local and well-known artists such as Ava Max, Mystikal, DJ Self, Young Dro and more. She has also DJ'd for events at the University of Illinois, Champaign Unit 4, Urbana District 116, Urbana Sweet Corn festival, Urbana Get Down, and many others. These opportunities have allowed for her to also be able to teach DJ-ing at her own camp, "She Spins DJ Camp."
Ja’Naea is very invested in her outreach to young people. Among the numerous “She Spins DJ Camps,” she also mentors several young people in the area through the organization Steam Genius. She loves working with children and is a community pillar. She has spent countless hours helping young people find their voice. She feels that investing in youth is investing in our future.
Ja’Naea’s was selected as the 2023 News-Gazette’s 40 Under 40 Woman of the Year. She is also an inaugural cast member of That’s What She Said Danville.
